How to troubleshoot "operation failed" on a node.
Greetings,I've been trying to find a way to go about this.Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2 on Windows Server Enterprise 2003 SP2.This is on an active/passive cluster of 2 nodes.Node one (not working well)can send and recieve email but attachments cannot be opened by clients.Node two (works well)can send and recieve email and attachments can be opened by clients.I'm doing research about repairing exchange but since there is only a single node that is not working I'm a bit confused. If anyone can provide any feedback on how to approach this. Will theMicrosoft Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant v1.1 help? The description reads: "The Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant can help to determine the cause of performance, mail flow and database mounting issues on computers running Microsoft Exchange Server. The tool automates specialized troubleshooting steps for identified symptoms."I'll begin with that tool too see what I can find.Well, thanks for your time and any help provided on this matter.Ed.

Do the users receive an error when trying to open the attachment? If so, what is the error? Do they have th application needed to open the attachment? From your input of the Troubleshooting Assistant, it doesn't sound like that will help you resolve your issue. Or are they not receiving the attachment all together?Do What You Know

Sorry for the late reply, I we were during recess and we got back to work today. The users receive the attachment but all they get is "The operation failed." trying to open it. It can be any attachment, a picture, word document, text file anything. If I move the resources to the other node and send the message again it arrives without problems and I can open any attachments.

I'm having the exact same problem with our Exchange 2003 Enterprise SP2 on Windows Server Enterprise 2003 SP1. When we failover to the inactive node, the users cannot open attachements. They get "The operation failed" or "An object cannot be found".I tried the Troubleshooting Assistant but did not get any results. My last resort is to open a ticket with Microsoft. If I get a fix, i'll post it on this thread.Howard

hi ed,Can you provide more info on this issue .Is there specific type of attachmentshaving the issue? What are the anti-virus application installed on the both node?Do we have exclusion set for exchange folders in file level anti-virus (if we have one)?are we able to open attchments using OWA?Jitendra S

Have you tried opening the attachment via OWA? - still the same issue?Do you have any third-party application/antivirus installed on the server which can be directly/indirectly related to exchange? This mostly happens if you have NON-VAPI/VAPI antivirus/misconfiguration of AV on the server.Try to forward that email to some other hotmail/gmail id and check if you were able to open that attachment. It could be an issue with the Database as well.So the question for you - Do you have antivirus on your active Node? If yes then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS and disabled background scanning & enable scan deletion key to 0.before you take the above registry key steps, take the full backup of your registry key.Backing Up and Restoring the Registryhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc758453.aspxArun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3
